It’s hard to believe this thing would work, but I’ve had it up for only 12 hours and there are already over two dozen horse and deer flies in the trap!
The only regret is that we did not buy the horsefly trap earlier.
Sir- I have read with interest your articles on horseflies (vet. 14 August). We have suffered badly this year, despite full fly rugs, masks and repellent- there were so many horseflies we began to wonder if they were going to eat the horses. Riding out became difficult and schooling in the field impossible. At one point, my ex-racehorse had more than 15 horseflies on him. Having tried almost every repellent on the market, in desperation we dug deep and purchased a horsefly trap. Duly this big black ball with its metal pole, hood and plastic trap arrived. We immediately set it up in the field, taking into account where the horseflies appear to come from; within minutes it had stared catching them and continues to do so. The number of horseflies reduced to the point that there is no need for flysheets and I can school in the field comfortably. The only regret is that we did not buy the horsefly trap earlier.

A few things about this trap which makes it different from other [horse fly] traps, as we have tried a variety. First, it’s sturdy. That’s important as we get afternoon thunderstorms and the wind can be quite strong. The way the “H” trap is constructed it moves with the wind and the conical shape sheds the wind. Also the trap base is galvanized steel with 3/8 bolts locking the trap base and structure sections together. Secondly the fly trap piece that collects the [horse] flies and other flying insects is easy to remove and clean. It doesn’t fall out of the steel bracket and it swivels with the wind. I don’t worry about this trap falling over and cracking the collector; it just doesn’t happen. This is the best and sturdiest trap we’ve ever had! Best of all it attracts the [horse] flies that bother horses…Lastly, the “H” Trap is a very effective trap that won’t fall over and self-destruct and it catches [horse] flies!
I put the H-Trap next to my swimming pool and in a few weeks my biting horse fly problem was gone.
Quick delivery. The package arrived sooner than anticipated, within just a few days of placing the order. We were able to capture 1 horsefly and 1 deer fly while setting it up. Surprisingly, within less than 2 hours of installation, there were already 7 flies caught. We are eagerly looking forward to seeing the number of catches after 24 hours. Overall, we are deeply impressed with the efficiency of the product, considering it a highly beneficial solution. Highly recommend.
Can't say enough good things about this trap. As I was installing the first trap I purchased 2 horse flies flew into it while I was cleaning up. In 2 days it caught more than I cared to count. 3 weeks later there must be over 200 horse flies. And it also has caught a few stable flies along the way. Great product. Best dollars I've spent on fly control.
Everyone was skeptical and even teased me when they saw me putting together this trap.. however, the jokes on them!!! It has been up for 2 weeks and we already have a bunch of flies in the trap (200ish?). Our pool is about 15 yards from a marshy area in our yard and last year flies made it nearly impossible to enjoy swimming without everyone being bitten. It was absolutely absolutely miserable! I got so bad that my dad, who has a bald head, had to wear a hat in order to swim in the pool. I was concerned that we weren’t going to be able to have people over and enjoy swimming because of all the bites! Fast forward to this week.. we had one pesky fly that was trying to get at us in the pool, otherwise, NOTHING!! I have a feeling when I put my citronella torches back up, the results will be even better. I am so thankful for this product and I’m really glad it is working so well since I had to convince my spouse that the investment would be worth it!
Used this for years, and the horsefly population is drastically reduced, almost gone.
